Pratham.org – India

Every child in school … and learning well

Linked with Urvashi Butalia – India;

Pratham is a large NGO involved in non-formal education for poor children in municipal schools, producing books in four or five languages … Pratham started in the slums of Mumbai in 1994, as a result of the vision of a couple of committed individuals! The two, after much deliberation, decided to tackle the problem of education headlong. They could see only one way of correcting this problem and that was to involve the people of Mumbai to help the government in its quest of universalizing primary education.

Center for Study of Working Class Life

The Center for Study of Working Class Life is dedicated to exploring the meaning of class in today’s world. Looking at society through the lens of class clarifies many important social questions in new ways – why the rich get richer while the poor get poorer, what attacks on government programs through privatization mean, why the suburbs aren’t really a middle class haven, how the « family values » debate impacts our lives, and much more. We are an interdisciplinary effort of faculty and staff at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, founded in November, 1999 …

Act Now For Harmony and Democracy ANHAD

Linked with Shabnam Hashmi – India.

The urgency to intervene in defence of democracy, secularism and justice has never been more pressing than in the conditions prevailing in the country today. There is a recognizable change in the general tenor of public discourse; unlike in the past, it is informed more by the communal than by secular ethos. In the face of concerted social mobilisation mounted by communal organisations by invoking religious symbols and sentiments, liberal civil society has come under a siege. Nevertheless, it is evident from the large number of secular democratic initiatives by political parties, voluntary organisations and individuals that society is seized of the need for sustained and constructive action for strengthening secularism and democracy and for realising justice and peace … (full text original vision).

They have created the Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation CDR:

The mission: The CDR hopes to serve as an initiative that links the issues of dialogue with justice and equity and through this integral link, begins to serve as a catalyst for both internal and external peace and reconciliation in South Asia. Several groups already exist to assist the goal of South Asian concord, but given both the enormity and complexity of the task a body with such a perspective, that of justice, peace and reconciliation, may also play a useful role.

Gruelling poverty, politicised manipulation of religions, gender disparities and caste-based oppressions coupled with excessive militarisation – that has today taken the form of potential nuclear anhilation – have combined to give an edge to the conflicts within the region, severely warping and wounding the daily life of South Asia’s nearly one and a half billion people. Economic advancement has been blocked; health, universal education and employment remain out of bounds for the vast majority of the people … (full long text/divers items).

The Community Exchange System CES

Linked with Dominique Plihon – France, and with the Canterbury Community Dollar CCD.

The Community Exchange System CES is an initiative of the South African New Economics Network SANE (see address below).

Caught in the money trap? Break free by joining the Community Exchange System: Conventional money is created as debt by private financial institutions for their own profit-making purposes, not as a social service. This is the root cause of the economic, social and environmental problems that beset us. The amount of debt determines the quantity of money, which has nothing to do with the amount of money we need to live decent lives. CES ‘money’ is created by its users so it can never be in short supply. So long as you can offer something of value you can have from the community goods and services of like value. Join the growing community who have discovered a new way of ‘doing’ money, a healthy money that will create a healthy society, (CES Homepage).

The SANE Community Exchange System (CES) is a community-based, global trading network using a money other than our familiar national ones — an alternative, parallel, local, community or complementary currency system. In short, the CES is a new money system … (what is the CES /about 1/2).
